Why I wrote Your Truth or Mine?

Your Truth or Mine? is a novel that grew out of a single image: a happily married woman discovering that her ‘perfect’ husband has been having an affair.

I knew from the beginning that I wanted to write about a dysfunctional marriage, one in which one partner’s version of the truth completely contradicted the other’s. I knew I wanted to write about subtle, and often crippling, forms of emotional and psychological control, and the shock of infidelity in a seemingly perfect relationship.

As I raced through my first draft, other themes started to emerge – cultural conditioning, mental health and the slipperiness of memory – and the complex narrative of a missing woman, an affair and a toxic marriage took shape.

Ultimately though, even if I didn’t know it at the time, I wrote Your Truth or Mine because it’s the story I wanted to read, the story of a modern Indian woman finally having the courage to silence the world and listen to her own voice.
